As a self-taught mixed media collage artist, my work is driven by an exploration of synergy—the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Through the creation of unexpected relationships between images, I aim to instill new meaning and purpose into my subjects, encouraging viewers to question society’s ideas about race, gender, nature and culture.
At the core of my practice are my “creatures,” representations of the union between humans and their spirit animals. These hybrid forms symbolize our shared connection to the energy that binds us all, transcending individual differences to reveal a universal bond. My intention is for viewers to recognize their own spirit reflected in these creatures, to witness their inner strength and resilience, and to feel a sense of unity with others in the process.
The source materials I use are drawn from a wide range of texts and imagery, dating from the 1400s to the 1900s, often sourced from public domain archives and libraries around the world. These historical fragments are reimagined and layered together to form new narratives—ones that challenge our perceptions and celebrate the complexities of human identity.
Through my work, I seek not only to honor the past but to create a visual dialogue that speaks to the interconnectedness of all people, encouraging a deeper understanding of ourselves and our shared humanity.
